Matcha Tea

What is matcha tea in perfumery?

Matcha is green tea made by finely grinding shade-grown tea leaves. In a fragrance description, matcha tea names a scent idea or accord rather than specifying a recipe. A perfume with this note can interpret the tea in different ways, so the accompanying notes matter as much as the name.

What does a matcha perfume smell like?

A useful starting point is the contrast between the tea accord and the rest of the composition. For example, Le Labo describes Thé Matcha 26 using matcha with creamy fig, vetiver, cedar and bitter orange. This illustrates a fig-and-woods interpretation; the word “matcha” alone does not promise the smell of a sweet latte.

When choosing a fragrance, compare its listed fig, cedar or vetiver notes with any vanilla or milk notes. These links let you explore the combinations, but they do not replace smelling a sample.

Matcha tea and other tea notes

Matcha is a type of green tea, while perfume catalogues may list green tea, black tea and matcha as separate note labels. Browse those profiles as well if you are exploring tea fragrances. A perfume’s name need not contain “matcha” for its note listing to include it.

How to use the fragrance list

The cards below show perfumes recorded with a matcha tea note. Open a fragrance to compare its full pyramid, brand and release information. To narrow the selection, use Search by Notes; to put two perfumes side by side, use Compare. Check the complete composition before deciding whether you want a woody tea fragrance or a sweeter interpretation.
