   A friend passed me a decant of Rare Carbon (2020) and I wasn’t prepared for it. The first minutes are all about Leather with a hint of Violet Leaf — it grabs attention without being pushy. The heart is the best part for me: Violet and Agarwood (Oud) feel carefully balanced. It projects politely for a couple of hours, then stays close and cosy. Sadly this one does not work on my skin.

   I picked up Rare Carbon (2020) mostly on a whim, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The opening is built around Leather and Violet Leaf — bright and immediately recognizable. That first spray gives a lovely Leather/Violet Leaf impression that dries down smoothly. On my skin the performance is reliable, not a beast but far from weak. This has earned a permanent spot in my rotation.

   Everyone keeps talking about Rare Carbon, so I finally gave it a proper test. The base rests on Vetiver and Sandalwood — warm, grounded and easy to live with. That first spray gives a lovely Leather/Violet Leaf impression that dries down smoothly. It projects politely for a couple of hours, then stays close and cosy. Sadly this one does not work on my skin.

   I needed a full wearing before I made my mind up about Rare Carbon. Give it a little time and Violet with Agarwood (Oud) comes forward — smooth and well done. Right away I get mostly Leather alongside Violet Leaf, fresh and very easy to wear. Projection stays close for the first hour, then becomes a soft, pleasant aura. Well done — recommended if the notes appeal to you.

After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Violet with Agarwood (Oud), which is where the fragrance really shines. As it settles, Vetiver and Sandalwood come through and give it real depth. In cooler weather it sits closer to the skin, which I actually prefer here. Well done — recommended if the notes appeal to you.

   A couple of wears in, Rare Carbon has really grown on me. Right away I get mostly Leather alongside Violet Leaf, fresh and very easy to wear. As it settles, Vetiver and Sandalwood come through and give it real depth. It performs better in warmer weather — in the heat it opens up nicely. This one gets my highest praise — beautiful from start to finish.
