   A decant of By sat in my box for weeks before I finally wore it. The very first sniff is crisp Lavender with Bergamot peeking through, very much my kind of start. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Lily with Cedar, which is where the fragrance really shines. The drydown lingers pleasantly, and I do not need to reapply at lunch. I would happily buy a full bottle.

   A friend passed me a decant of By (1999) and I wasn’t prepared for it. Give it a little time and Lily with Cedar comes forward — smooth and well done. The very first sniff is crisp Lavender with Bergamot peeking through, very much my kind of start. Two sprays are enough — it carries well without shouting. Well done — recommended if the notes appeal to you.

   My first Dolce & Gabbana experience was this one, By (1999). After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Lily with Cedar, which is where the fragrance really shines. The very first sniff is crisp Lavender with Bergamot peeking through, very much my kind of start. Three sprays last me most of the day without ever becoming cloying. It is fine, but it does not stand out in my collection.

I enjoy it when I wear it, yet I rarely think of reaching for it.
