   A friend passed me a decant of White Shoulders (1945) and I wasn’t prepared for it. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Gardenia with Lilac, which is where the fragrance really shines. Right away I get mostly Aldehydes alongside African Orange Flower, fresh and very easy to wear. The trail is there if someone steps close, not across the room. It is fine, but it does not stand out in my collection.

   I’ve been wearing White Shoulders on and off for a few weeks now (1945). The very first sniff is crisp Aldehydes with African Orange Flower peeking through, very much my kind of start. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Gardenia with Lilac, which is where the fragrance really shines. Longevity is moderate and the trail is noticeable without being loud. Worth sampling before committing to a bottle.

Give it a little time and Gardenia with Lilac comes forward — smooth and well done. Three sprays last me most of the day without ever becoming cloying. Sadly this one does not work on my skin.

The base rests on Civetta and Oakmoss — warm, grounded and easy to live with. Projection stays close for the first hour, then becomes a soft, pleasant aura. Well done — recommended if the notes appeal to you.

   I have owned White Shoulders for a while now and my opinion has only gotten stronger. That first spray gives a lovely Aldehydes/African Orange Flower impression that dries down smoothly. The first minutes are all about Aldehydes with a hint of African Orange Flower — it grabs attention without being pushy. After a few hours it becomes a soft skin scent with a lovely trail. I can see this getting a lot of wear in my collection.
