   My first Goutal experience was this one, Mandragore Pourpre (2009). The very first sniff is crisp Star Anise with Mint peeking through, very much my kind of start. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Pepper with Rosemary, which is where the fragrance really shines. Three sprays last me most of the day without ever becoming cloying. I can see this getting a lot of wear in my collection.

   A friend passed me a decant of Mandragore Pourpre (2009) and I wasn’t prepared for it. That first spray gives a lovely Star Anise/Mint impression that dries down smoothly. The very first sniff is crisp Star Anise with Mint peeking through, very much my kind of start. It performs better in warmer weather — in the heat it opens up nicely. I reach for it often and always enjoy the wear.

   Everyone keeps talking about Mandragore Pourpre, so I finally gave it a proper test. That first spray gives a lovely Star Anise/Mint impression that dries down smoothly. The base rests on Incense and Patchouli — warm, grounded and easy to live with. The drydown lingers pleasantly, and I do not need to reapply at lunch. Pleasant, though I would not call it essential.
