   I picked up Babylon (2019) mostly on a whim, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The very first sniff is crisp Nutmeg with Saffron peeking through, very much my kind of start. The opening is built around Nutmeg and Saffron — bright and immediately recognizable. I get about four to six hours before it turns into a skin scent. I reach for it often and always enjoy the wear.

   Penhaligon’s knows how to compose, and Babylon (2019) is proof. The base rests on Vanilla and Sandalwood — warm, grounded and easy to live with. Right away I get mostly Nutmeg alongside Saffron, fresh and very easy to wear. It lasts through a full workday on me, which is exactly what I want. A very likeable composition that is easy to appreciate.

   A friend passed me a decant of Babylon (2019) and I wasn’t prepared for it. Give it a little time and Cypriol Oil or Nagarmotha comes forward — smooth and well done. The very first sniff is crisp Nutmeg with Saffron peeking through, very much my kind of start. On my skin the performance is reliable, not a beast but far from weak. Well done — recommended if the notes appeal to you.

That first spray gives a lovely Nutmeg/Saffron impression that dries down smoothly. The drydown lingers pleasantly, and I do not need to reapply at lunch. The composition is well made but not for me.

   Everyone keeps talking about Babylon, so I finally gave it a proper test. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Cypriol Oil or Nagarmotha, which is where the fragrance really shines. Give it a little time and Cypriol Oil or Nagarmotha comes forward — smooth and well done. Two sprays are enough — it carries well without shouting. The composition is well made but not for me.

   I needed a full wearing before I made my mind up about Babylon. The first minutes are all about Nutmeg with a hint of Saffron — it grabs attention without being pushy. The drydown leans on Vanilla plus Sandalwood and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. After a few hours it becomes a soft skin scent with a lovely trail. I would happily buy a full bottle.
