   For a 2006 release, Black Orchid deserves more attention than it gets. The base rests on Mexican chocolate and Patchouli — warm, grounded and easy to live with. That first spray gives a lovely Truffle/Gardenia impression that dries down smoothly. It performs better in warmer weather — in the heat it opens up nicely. I reach for it often and always enjoy the wear.

   A friend passed me a decant of Black Orchid (2006) and I wasn’t prepared for it. The very first sniff is crisp Truffle with Gardenia peeking through, very much my kind of start. That first spray gives a lovely Truffle/Gardenia impression that dries down smoothly. Two sprays are enough — it carries well without shouting. Well done — recommended if the notes appeal to you.

Right away I get mostly Truffle alongside Gardenia, fresh and very easy to wear. On my skin the performance is reliable, not a beast but far from weak. I would happily buy a full bottle.

As it settles, Mexican chocolate and Patchouli come through and give it real depth. It projects politely for a couple of hours, then stays close and cosy. I enjoy it when I wear it, yet I rarely think of reaching for it.

Easily one of my favourite finds this season.
