   A couple of wears in, Mandragore has really grown on me. Give it a little time and Star Anise with Mint comes forward — smooth and well done. The base rests on boxwood and Labdanum — warm, grounded and easy to live with. The drydown lingers pleasantly, and I do not need to reapply at lunch. I can see its quality, but it simply is not my style.

   A decant of Mandragore sat in my box for weeks before I finally wore it. The opening is built around Bergamot and Pepper — bright and immediately recognizable. As it settles, boxwood and Labdanum come through and give it real depth. Three sprays last me most of the day without ever becoming cloying. A very likeable composition that is easy to appreciate.

   A friend passed me a decant of Mandragore (2009) and I wasn’t prepared for it. The drydown leans on boxwood plus Labdanum and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. Right away I get mostly Bergamot alongside Pepper, fresh and very easy to wear. It wears beautifully in the office; I can still catch it on my scarf at the end of the day. Sadly this one does not work on my skin.

   I picked up Mandragore (2009) mostly on a whim, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The drydown leans on boxwood plus Labdanum and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. Right away I get mostly Bergamot alongside Pepper, fresh and very easy to wear. It wears beautifully in the office; I can still catch it on my scarf at the end of the day. Full-bottle worthy without a doubt.

   Goutal knows how to compose, and Mandragore (2009) is proof. That first spray gives a lovely Bergamot/Pepper impression that dries down smoothly. The drydown leans on boxwood plus Labdanum and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. Performance is consistent: comfortable sillage and several hours of wear on my skin. Well done — recommended if the notes appeal to you.

   My first Goutal experience was this one, Mandragore (2009). The heart is the best part for me: Star Anise and Mint feel carefully balanced. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Star Anise with Mint, which is where the fragrance really shines. After a few hours it becomes a soft skin scent with a lovely trail. A solid addition for anyone who enjoys this style.

    Everyone keeps talking about Mandragore, so I finally gave it a proper test. The base rests on boxwood and Labdanum — warm, grounded and easy to live with. As it settles, boxwood and Labdanum come through and give it real depth. It projects politely for a couple of hours, then stays close and cosy. Worth sampling before committing to a bottle.
