   I keep reaching for Petale Noir more than I expected to. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Rose with Lily-of-the-Valley, which is where the fragrance really shines. The very first sniff is crisp Magnolia with Hyacinth peeking through, very much my kind of start. It wears beautifully in the office; I can still catch it on my scarf at the end of the day. I can see this getting a lot of wear in my collection.

   I needed a full wearing before I made my mind up about Petale Noir. The base rests on Leather and Oakmoss — warm, grounded and easy to live with. As it settles, Leather and Oakmoss come through and give it real depth. It performs better in warmer weather — in the heat it opens up nicely. It is fine, but it does not stand out in my collection.

   Agent Provocateur knows how to compose, and Petale Noir (2012) is proof. The drydown leans on Leather plus Oakmoss and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. Right away I get mostly Magnolia alongside Hyacinth, fresh and very easy to wear. It wears beautifully in the office; I can still catch it on my scarf at the end of the day. This one gets my highest praise — beautiful from start to finish.

This one gets my highest praise — beautiful from start to finish.

The opening is built around Magnolia and Hyacinth — bright and immediately recognizable. Projection stays close for the first hour, then becomes a soft, pleasant aura. This has earned a permanent spot in my rotation.
