   Amouage knows how to compose, and Interlude Black Iris (2020) is proof. The heart is the best part for me: Orris and Olibanum feel carefully balanced. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Orris with Olibanum, which is where the fragrance really shines. After a few hours it becomes a soft skin scent with a lovely trail. This one gets my highest praise — beautiful from start to finish.

   A friend passed me a decant of Interlude Black Iris (2020) and I wasn’t prepared for it. Give it a little time and Orris with Olibanum comes forward — smooth and well done. The base rests on Leather and Agarwood (Oud) — warm, grounded and easy to live with. Projection stays close for the first hour, then becomes a soft, pleasant aura. I can see this getting a lot of wear in my collection.

   Everyone keeps talking about Interlude Black Iris, so I finally gave it a proper test. Right away I get mostly Violet Leaf alongside Rosemary, fresh and very easy to wear. As it settles, Leather and Agarwood (Oud) come through and give it real depth. On my skin the performance is reliable, not a beast but far from weak. The composition is well made but not for me.

   For a 2020 release, Interlude Black Iris deserves more attention than it gets. The first minutes are all about Violet Leaf with a hint of Rosemary — it grabs attention without being pushy. The very first sniff is crisp Violet Leaf with Rosemary peeking through, very much my kind of start. Longevity is moderate and the trail is noticeable without being loud. This has earned a permanent spot in my rotation.

The first minutes are all about Violet Leaf with a hint of Rosemary — it grabs attention without being pushy. The base rests on Leather and Agarwood (Oud) — warm, grounded and easy to live with. It performs better in warmer weather — in the heat it opens up nicely. Well done — recommended if the notes appeal to you.

   My first Amouage experience was this one, Interlude Black Iris (2020). The very first sniff is crisp Violet Leaf with Rosemary peeking through, very much my kind of start. Right away I get mostly Violet Leaf alongside Rosemary, fresh and very easy to wear. It is not the loudest scent I own, but the balance suits it well. I can see its quality, but it simply is not my style.

I wanted to like it more than I did.
