   A couple of wears in, Opus 1870 has really grown on me. The heart is the best part for me: Incense and Rose feel carefully balanced. The drydown leans on Virginia Cedar plus Sandalwood and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. It performs better in warmer weather — in the heat it opens up nicely. I can see this getting a lot of wear in my collection.

   A friend passed me a decant of Opus 1870 (2005) and I wasn’t prepared for it. As it settles, Virginia Cedar and Sandalwood come through and give it real depth. The drydown leans on Virginia Cedar plus Sandalwood and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. Longevity is moderate and the trail is noticeable without being loud. This one gets my highest praise — beautiful from start to finish.

   Penhaligon’s knows how to compose, and Opus 1870 (2005) is proof. Right away I get mostly Pepper alongside Yuzu, fresh and very easy to wear. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Incense with Rose, which is where the fragrance really shines. The trail is there if someone steps close, not across the room. The composition is well made but not for me.

The opening is built around Pepper and Yuzu — bright and immediately recognizable. On my skin the performance is reliable, not a beast but far from weak. Well done — recommended if the notes appeal to you.

   I’ve been wearing Opus 1870 on and off for a few weeks now (2005). The base rests on Virginia Cedar and Sandalwood — warm, grounded and easy to live with. The very first sniff is crisp Pepper with Yuzu peeking through, very much my kind of start. On my skin the performance is reliable, not a beast but far from weak. I reach for it often and always enjoy the wear.

   My first Penhaligon’s experience was this one, Opus 1870 (2005). The very first sniff is crisp Pepper with Yuzu peeking through, very much my kind of start. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Incense with Rose, which is where the fragrance really shines. The drydown lingers pleasantly, and I do not need to reapply at lunch. I would happily buy a full bottle.

It lasts through a full workday on me, which is exactly what I want. Sadly this one does not work on my skin.

Give it a little time and Incense with Rose comes forward — smooth and well done. It is not the loudest scent I own, but the balance suits it well.
