   I picked up XS (1994) mostly on a whim, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The opening is built around Bergamot and Mint — bright and immediately recognizable. The very first sniff is crisp Bergamot with Mint peeking through, very much my kind of start. The drydown lingers pleasantly, and I do not need to reapply at lunch. Full-bottle worthy without a doubt.

   For a 1994 release, XS deserves more attention than it gets. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Juniper with Brazilian Rosewood, which is where the fragrance really shines. The heart is the best part for me: Juniper and Brazilian Rosewood feel carefully balanced. In cooler weather it sits closer to the skin, which I actually prefer here. This one gets my highest praise — beautiful from start to finish.

   A friend passed me a decant of XS (1994) and I wasn’t prepared for it. As it settles, Sandalwood and Musk come through and give it real depth. The drydown leans on Sandalwood plus Musk and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. It projects politely for a couple of hours, then stays close and cosy. It is fine, but it does not stand out in my collection.

The very first sniff is crisp Bergamot with Mint peeking through, very much my kind of start. After a few hours it becomes a soft skin scent with a lovely trail. I reach for it often and always enjoy the wear.
