   A decant of Polo sat in my box for weeks before I finally wore it. The very first sniff is crisp Juniper Berries with Basil peeking through, very much my kind of start. The drydown leans on Tobacco plus Oakmoss and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. It is not the loudest scent I own, but the balance suits it well. Worth sampling before committing to a bottle.

   My first Ralph Lauren experience was this one, Polo (1978). Right away I get mostly Juniper Berries alongside Basil, fresh and very easy to wear. Give it a little time and Pine Tree Needles with Leather comes forward — smooth and well done. Projection stays close for the first hour, then becomes a soft, pleasant aura. Pleasant, though I would not call it essential.

The base rests on Tobacco and Oakmoss — warm, grounded and easy to live with. Three sprays last me most of the day without ever becoming cloying. This has earned a permanent spot in my rotation.

   A friend passed me a decant of Polo (1978) and I wasn’t prepared for it. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Pine Tree Needles with Leather, which is where the fragrance really shines. The drydown leans on Tobacco plus Oakmoss and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. On my skin the performance is reliable, not a beast but far from weak. This one gets my highest praise — beautiful from start to finish.

It wears beautifully in the office; I can still catch it on my scarf at the end of the day. I can see this getting a lot of wear in my collection.

That first spray gives a lovely Juniper Berries/Basil impression that dries down smoothly. After a few hours it becomes a soft skin scent with a lovely trail.
