   A friend passed me a decant of Champion (2010) and I wasn’t prepared for it. The opening is built around Bergamot and Lemon — bright and immediately recognizable. After about twenty minutes the heart settles into Clary Sage with Galbanum, which is where the fragrance really shines. The trail is there if someone steps close, not across the room. Easily one of my favourite finds this season.

Worth sampling before committing to a bottle.

   For a 2010 release, Champion deserves more attention than it gets. The drydown leans on Oakmoss plus Cedar and that is exactly where it feels most comfortable. As it settles, Oakmoss and Cedar come through and give it real depth. It lasts through a full workday on me, which is exactly what I want. I would happily buy a full bottle.

Right away I get mostly Bergamot alongside Lemon, fresh and very easy to wear. It wears beautifully in the office; I can still catch it on my scarf at the end of the day. Pleasant, though I would not call it essential.

   A couple of wears in, Champion has really grown on me. Give it a little time and Clary Sage with Galbanum comes forward — smooth and well done. The heart is the best part for me: Clary Sage and Galbanum feel carefully balanced. In cooler weather it sits closer to the skin, which I actually prefer here. I enjoy it when I wear it, yet I rarely think of reaching for it.
